A Dining Space That Finally Fits: A Bespoke Bench & Table for a Growing South London Family

How a kitchen extension, a newborn, and the wrong furniture led to a made-to-measure solid timber solution with integrated storage.

When a kitchen extension is finished, there’s often a moment of quiet satisfaction — followed shortly by the realisation that the furniture no longer works.

That was exactly the situation for this South London couple. Their newly extended kitchen was bright, generous, and clearly designed for everyday family life. However, their existing dining table and chairs, which had worked perfectly well before, no longer suited the proportions, flow, or practical needs of the space.

With a newborn baby now part of the household, the dining area needed to be calm, efficient, and thoughtfully organised. Instead of filling the space with another off-the-shelf set and hoping it would “do”, they commissioned us to design and build a bespoke dining bench and table that would fit the space properly — and work hard behind the scenes.

The Challenge: Space Without Structure

The problem wasn’t a lack of room. It was a lack of intention.

The original furniture sat awkwardly within the new footprint, leaving wasted floor space, disrupted circulation, and no dedicated storage. This is a common issue in London kitchen extensions: the architecture moves forward, but the furniture stays behind.

The clients needed:

  • seating that used the full length of the wall

  • a table scaled precisely to the room

  • discreet storage for everyday family items

  • furniture that would remain practical as their child grows

The Design Response: A Bench That Works Harder Than It Looks

We proposed a bespoke dining bench with five integrated drawers, paired with a made-to-measure solid timber dining table.

The bench runs along the wall to maximise seating while keeping walkways clear — a simple decision that makes a significant difference in family homes. The five drawers are built directly into the structure of the bench, providing practical storage without adding visual clutter.

These drawers were designed to disappear into the piece, not compete with it. They offer space for everyday items — placemats, toys, paperwork — the sort of things that otherwise migrate across tables and worktops.

Storage, in this case, is not an add-on.It is part of the architecture of the furniture.

Materials & Craftsmanship: Built to Be Used

Both the bench and table were built in solid timber, chosen for strength, longevity, and warmth. The structure was carefully considered to ensure the drawers operate smoothly, the seating remains comfortable, and the table maintains long-term stability.

The internal partitions and drawer carcasses were constructed from high-quality plywood to provide dimensional stability, strength, and consistent drawer performance over time.

The entire set was finished in a medium oak tone, selected to complement the kitchen and flooring while ageing gracefully over time. This is not a finish designed to impress briefly, but one intended to settle in and improve with use.

Every joint, proportion, and internal detail was designed with real life in mind — not just how the furniture looks on installation day, but how it performs years later.

From behind the scenes to the finished result - watch the transformation unfold!

Client Testimonial – Sorcha, South London: “Working with Antonio was a genuinely collaborative experience from start to finish. We were able to visit the workshop during the early stages of the build, see the bench and table taking shape, and discuss the finer details before everything was finalised. Antonio was open, thoughtful, and flexible where small tweaks were needed, and any adjustments were handled calmly without affecting the timeline. The result is a beautifully made dining bench and table that fits our space perfectly and works so well for our family. We’re absolutely delighted with both the process and the finished piece.”

The Result: A Dining Area That Feels Complete

Once installed, the dining space finally made sense.

The bench fills the wall with purpose, the table sits comfortably within the room, and circulation through the kitchen feels natural and unobstructed. Seating is generous without clutter, and storage is exactly where it’s needed — present, but never obvious.

Most importantly, the furniture supports daily family life quietly and reliably, without demanding attention.

The room no longer feels “new but unfinished”. It feels resolved.

Why Bespoke Matters in Spaces Like This

Bespoke furniture is often misunderstood as a luxury choice. In reality, it is often the most practical one.

When furniture is designed around a specific space:

  • square metres are used efficiently

  • storage is integrated, not improvised

  • layouts feel calmer and more intentional

  • pieces last longer and work harder

In London homes, where space is valuable and family life is dynamic, those benefits compound quickly.
